One of the most frequently asked questions: “How to properly care for and clean moissanite products“. We decided to write a small instruction that will help you preserve the shine and play of the stone for a long time, as on the first day of purchase.

Moissanite is one of the strongest stones used in jewelry. Its hardness is 9.25-9.5 on the Mohs scale. This means that this stone is resistant to scratches and daily wear and tear. For comparison, the hardest mineral on Earth, diamond, has a score of 10.

However, like all gemstones, moissanite needs regular care to keep the stone shining for years to come. Fortunately, moissanite is quite easy to care for, and you can do it even at home.

Storage

One of the first items you will definitely need after purchasing a piece of moissanite jewelry is a jewelry box. It will protect the stone from dust and help to keep the piece in its original form for as long as possible.

It is best to store moissanite jewelry separately in a bag or box with a fabric lining and compartments that separate it from other items. Moissanite is very hard, which means it can scratch other, softer gemstones and metals.

Cleaning moissanite at home

Over time, you may notice that moissanite seems to have lost its luster. This applies not only to moissanite, but also to jewelry with diamonds and other stones.

The fact is that due to constant contact with the body and moisture, a greasy layer forms on the stone. Dust and dirt get on its surface, and the jewelry loses its former charm.

It is impossible to avoid contamination in everyday life, but there are several recommendations on how to prolong the purity of the product:

When wearing it, you should try not to touch the stone, because it quickly forms a greasy coating from the skin, fingers, and hands.
Try to remove the jewelry before cosmetic procedures. For example, hand cream can easily get clogged even in hard-to-reach places of the jewelry.
It is advisable to remove the jewelry before washing your hands. Soaps and some types of antiseptics sometimes contain glycerin and moisturizing ingredients, and they can leave a film on the stone.

Cleaning:

The easiest way to maintain the surface of the stone is to clean it with rubbing alcohol. You can use a cloth or napkin to remove the greasy layer that has appeared during the day.

If you notice heavy dirt under the stone in the setting, prepare a simple solution of dishwashing detergent (a few drops) and warm water. Put the jewelry in for 10 minutes, then clean the dirt with a toothbrush with the softest bristles. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water to wash off any residue.

* Bristle hardness is always indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer.

Brushing with a regular bristle brush, toothpaste or soda is strictly contraindicated. Their abrasive properties, although they cannot damage moissanite, will easily scratch the precious metal frame, and the jewelry will tarnish.

Dry the moissanite jewelry well with a lint-free cloth.

Professional care products

If you decide that you need something more professional than soap and water, you can choose a ready-made jewelry cleaner that is specially formulated to clean gemstones such as diamonds, moissanite, and corundum.

Choose a non-toxic, non-abrasive cleaner that matches the description of your jewelry and follow the instructions to make your moissanite shine again.

*Please note that not all products are equally suitable for different types of metals and stones.

Using ammonia with moissanite (ammonia)

Ammonia (ammonia) is very effective for cleaning moissanite jewelry. Wear safety goggles and gloves before use and work only in a well-ventilated area.

To prepare the solution, dilute 1 part ammonia with 1-2 parts water. Place the moissanite jewelry in the solution for a few minutes (depending on the degree of dirt), and then clean thoroughly with a soft brush. When finished, rinse thoroughly with running water.

Moissanite is a fairly dense stone, it is fully suitable for use in ultrasonicators and is cleaned well by them.

We recommend professional ultrasonic cleaning in jewelry workshops approximately once a year (depending on the level of contamination). Vibrations will effectively and efficiently remove dirt from jewelry, even in very hard-to-reach places. Ultrasonic baths will help to restore shine and cleanliness to the jewelry.

Before using this cleaning method, consult with your jeweler, as some types of small stones are not resistant to ultrasound and may need to be checked. Also, such cleaning is undesirable for jewelry with enamel and inserts of other stones of lower density.

WHAT TO AVOID

Harmful chemicals

Avoid strong chemicals. These are aggressive detergents and abrasives: hairspray, glue, resin. Although they cannot directly damage moissanite, they increase the accumulation of dirt and reduce the luster of the stone. Sometimes a persistent hairspray can make cleaning much more difficult. When sprayed, the substance evenly covers the hard-to-reach places of the stone and eventually coarsens (dries). Cleaning such a stone may require the stone to be completely unfastened from the jeweler’s setting.

Strength tests

It is true that moissanite can withstand wear and scratches, but this does not mean that it cannot be damaged at all. A strong and at the same time sharp blow aimed at one point of the stone can lead to a chip. It is best to take off a moissanite ring (bracelet, pendants, and earrings) beforehand to avoid damaging it while playing sports, hiking, gardening, etc.

Moissanite can be scratched – by materials or substances with a hardness that exceeds the hardness of moissanite. For example, diamond-tipped or coated tools and other abrasives with a hardness higher than 9.5. Try to avoid such contacts.

DOES MOISSANITE BECOME DULL?

This is the most frequently asked question by our customers. The good news is that high-quality moissanite never tarnishes, unlike inexpensive diamond imitators such as cubic zirconia or cubic zirconia.

However, over time, as dirt and plaque accumulate, your moissanite can become hazy, as if with a veil. But since moissanite never becomes cloudy from the inside, any film is purely superficial and can be removed by cleaning.

WHAT IS A MOISSANITE GASOLINE STAIN?

Oil rainbow spots on moissanite.

It is an oily effect on the surface of the stone, which can look like iridescent “gasoline” spots due to the formation of an organic film. This is not a permanent stain and can be removed by cleaning.

The best way to clean an oil stain is to use silver polish and a toothbrush or cloth. Apply silver polishing cream to the surface of moissanite with a brush, go over the stone in a circular motion, and then rinse. The oil stain will come off and the stone will shine beautifully. You can do this at a jeweler who will help you clean the stain thoroughly and carefully without touching the details of the setting.

You can always ask for help with jewelry cleaning at Moissanite Ukraine, or ask us a question if you need additional advice.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MOISSANITE BE CLEANED?

There are no rules about when to clean moissanite. Everything is unique, and you may feel that the stone needs to be cleaned at a certain point.

We recommend that you observe your jewelry daily and store it carefully. Over time, the stones’ fastenings weaken, and there is a risk of losing the stone. To avoid such a situation, pay attention to the sudden mobility of the stone in the jewelry. If you have any doubts, you should immediately bring it to the repair shop, where the master will check the fastening and correct it if necessary.

Gemstones are said to have magical properties. Diamond gives strength, emerald gives peace of mind, ruby symbolizes love and passion. And I found my stone, which embodied all the best qualities, and it became an extension of my thoughts and desires.

Hi, I am Alexia Samoylova, the founder of Muassanite Ukraine. And today I will tell you the story of a small dream that turned into a life’s work.

I have always been concerned about the protection of nature. The theme of ecology and rational consumption of resources is deeply ingrained in my consciousness, so I appreciate companies that use environmentally friendly production methods and minimize the impact on the environment.

This is how my passion was born – handmade products. They are authentic, eco-friendly and with a soul of their own. I admire and am inspired by talented Ukrainian craftsmen. After all, handmade products are the most valuable form of art.

A few years ago I came across a phrase: “Do what you can with what you have, where you are”. If I’m not mistaken, its author was Theodore Roosevelt. It hooked me, but I didn’t realize its true meaning until the end. Understanding came much later – through the prism of values and experience.

How our history began

The story of Muassanit Ukraine began long before the company opened. It was 2017 – and I did not even know about the existence of moissanite. But deep down I hoped that somewhere there is a beautiful stone that pleases the eye and does not cause damage to the planet.

I remember I needed new jewelry for the big day. I spent a long time shopping in stores with expensive diamonds, fiery rubies, and dazzling emeralds glittering in the windows. Wrong, all wrong. I was looking for an alternative jewelry stone that wasn’t mined from the bowels of the planet like the known natural stones. I was looking for jewelry that would fit into my principles and relationship with the world around me. But there was nothing in jewelry stores that was both beautiful and eco-friendly.

I continued my search on the Internet – and learned that modern technology had taken the creation of stones in the laboratory to a new level. The process didn’t violate environmental principles or use cheap labor, as it does in mines. Diving deeper into the topic, on a foreign portal I found information about a new stone called moissanite.

Until that day, I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. But when I saw the image and description of this stone, it became clear – I was looking for it almost all my life. It conquered me with its appearance and its characteristics. It was love at first sight – the moissanite embodied all my dreams of a jewelry stone, corresponded to my views on ecology and my philosophy.

Moissanite: a gift to our planet from outer space

As a mineral, moissanite does not exist in nature, but is concentrated in large quantities in space. It was discovered in 1893, when they examined a fallen meteorite and found small particles of unknown origin. It took almost a century to learn how to grow moissanite in the laboratory. It wasn’t until 15 years ago that the first large specimen appeared and was cut as a jewelry stone.

After reading such a story, I wanted to buy jewelry with moissanite, but it turned out to be a difficult task. There was not a single mention of this stone on Ukrainian websites.

None of the sellers had heard of it, even there was no reference information in Ukrainian about such a stone.

A thought struck me like a lightning bolt. Muassanite should definitely appear in Ukraine. People who share my views should know about this ecologically conflict-free stone and have an opportunity to buy it.

This is how I got the wonderful idea to create a life’s work by linking my principles of environmental friendliness and my love for handicrafts. I know that Ukrainian jewelers are talented craftsmen! But they are often oppressed by large jewelry companies, where processes are mechanized and performed by machines. In those days, when the plan was maturing in my head, I wanted to fly. And this continues to this day.

Muassanit Ukraine is not just a business, it is a business that embodies my values, philosophy and dreams. They continue in every stone and every product.

I am inspired by the fact that more and more people support the idea of buying jewelry with a beautiful stone that does not harm the planet. I am inspired by the fact that I give jewelers the opportunity to realize their creative potential. I am inspired by the idea to revive Ukrainians’ interest in handmade craftsmanship.

Now I look at the results of my journey and I am as happy as the day when I saw moissanite for the first time. I am developing a culture of its use, telling people about this beautiful stone, and I finally understand the meaning of Roosevelt’s phrase.

Man is taking literally everything from the planet – clean air and clean oceans, cutting down forests for shopping centers and enslaving animals for fun. And to get a couple of handfuls of diamonds, entire ecosystems are destroyed. We live in the 21st century – and these realities are long outdated, they cannot continue in the modern world.

I realize that I cannot single-handedly change the future of the entire planet. But I can live according to my philosophy and not betray myself. I am finally doing what I can, with what I have, where I am.

My mission is to draw people’s attention to this unique stone, to tell them about its advantages and by my example to encourage them to think about ecology.

My goal is to tell that jewelry with moissanite is just as beautiful and shining. But at the same time – they are friends of our planet.

I hope that moissanite will inspire you to do good things too. I wish everyone to feel the wings behind their backs and one day wake up with the realization that their dreams have come true.

Today we will talk about the quality of gold and its composition.

Gold is a very soft material that has a Mohs hardness of only 2.5. Pure gold (99.99%) is softer than tooth enamel, so it is easy to scratch.

An interesting fact:

Ancient traders used to try a gold coin “on the tooth” to distinguish it from a fake.

A genuine gold coin left a small dent when bitten and did not have a specific flavor, such as copper, like counterfeit coins.

⠀

Jewelry made of pure gold is not suitable for everyday use because it is fragile, flexible, and easily breaks and scratches. That is why other metals are added to gold to make it harder – ligatures.

The percentage of impurities added to gold determines its grade.

The grade shows how much pure gold is in the alloy.

The highest 999 grade is precious metal, gold without impurities (99.9% gold).

There is a carat and metric system of gold assays.

Carat grade

The oldest and most widespread in the world is the karat (Karat).

* A carat in a gem is denoted by the letter “C” Carat.

⠀

An interesting fact:

People used to take plant seeds as the equivalent of weight. For example, the ideal of weight in the Roman Empire was the evergreen carob tree, which is often found in the Mediterranean (Ceratōnia silīqua).

Its pods contain beans weighing 0.2 grams each. The measure was named “Siliqua” from siliqua (bean), and it later became known as “Carat” (from Ceratōnia).

How did the “bean carat” become the standard for gold purity?

In 309, Emperor Constantine I began minting coins of the purest gold weighing exactly 24 Silicas (or 24 carats). Because of their consistently high composition, they were considered the most prestigious. And so began the history of the karat gold standard.

⠀

While in gemstones, carat means the weight itself, in gold it is the ratio of gold to impurities. In other words, how many parts of pure gold are contained in 24 parts of an alloy.

In total, there are five options in the karat system: 9, 10, 14, 18 and 24 karat gold.

And the highest grade of 24 carats means 99.9% gold.

For example, 14 karat means 14 parts of pure gold and 10 parts of other metals.

Dividing 14 by 24, we get 0.58333 or 583 assay.

The grades correspond to the following table:

24 K or 999 assay – 99% gold

18 K or 750 grade – 75% of gold

14 K or 583 samples – 58.3%.

10 K or 417 grade – 41.7%.

9 K – the lowest, 37.5%.

Metric sample

In the post-Soviet countries, the metric sample system has been adopted since 1927. These are the familiar 999, 750, 583, 500 and 375 samples.

The only exception is that in 1994, the 583 standard was changed to 585 (containing 58.5% pure gold) for convenience.

By the way, 585 is the most practical!

On the other hand, the higher the gold content in the alloy, the less it is subject to oxidation and darkens.

⠀

An interesting fact:

Our 750 and 585 grades are inferior in strength to the European 18K and 14K grades.

This is because more soft copper is added to the ligature (impurities) of our gold, while the European standard contains more silver.

Now do you understand why we have gold with a reddish tint, while in Europe it is yellow?

Moissanite is a rare mineral that occurs naturally on Earth only in minute quantities and only in places where meteorites have fallen. People first noticed it about a hundred years ago, when scientist Henri Moissan investigated a fallen meteorite in South America.

Muassanite, or rather its smallest particles, were first found in the meteorite debris. The stone was named in honor of its discoverer, who at the beginning of the XX century attracted the attention of scientists to space crystals. Henri Moissan announced that these are not just meteorite fragments, but new precious stones! For the discovery of the mineral, the scientist was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Although similar in appearance to a diamond, the composition of these stones is different:

diamond consists only of carbon atoms (C), while moissanite is formed where silicon is mixed with carbon (Si + C)
Diamond burns completely at 800C°, while the melting point of moissanite is 2400C°.

For the atoms of these two nonmetals to line up in a slender row of the crystal lattice, you need high temperature and pressure, which are physically impossible on our planet.

Therefore, muassanite is formed in abundance only in areas of intense energy release – where there are large-scale cosmic catastrophes.

The brightest stone in the world

In its pure form, these meteorite stones are so rare that there are only a few handfuls of natural moissanite on Earth. Nevertheless, this stone turned out to be so attractive, spectacular and superior in its parameters to a diamond that in the twentieth century the world’s first moissanite was created.

Studies of the crystal’s optical properties yielded astonishing results:

The light refractive index of moissanite is a quarter higher than that of diamond.

The dispersion (the ability to produce flashes of color deep within the stone) is two and a half times that of a diamond!
This stone shines stronger and more expressively than even perfectly cut diamonds.

The only reason it is not very famous is because most gemstones (sapphires, emeralds, diamonds) have been known to mankind for a long time, while the first moissanite was created only at the end of the XX century.

Ecological and conflict-free to nature

Moissanite is a friend of nature and this is its great advantage. The cultivation of Muassanite does not destroy the subsoil and resources of our planet. Its production is eco-friendly and friendly to nature!

We used to think that the most beautiful gemstone is a diamond. You will be surprised, but in fact the most beautiful and brightest stone in the world is Moissanite. In terms of brightness, brilliance and radiance it exceeds the parameters of a diamond several times. It is a new stone in the jewelry space, but the demand in the U.S. and Europe for several years has already reached the highest marks and has become a real trend.

Connoisseurs of precious stones treat the moissanite with great attention and warmth and consider it the crown of creation among precious stones. It is present in the collections of jewelry aficionados, because its beauty and characteristics are admirable.

Muassanite refracts light so strongly that it is almost two and a half times more beautiful than any diamond.
And its hardness is equal to diamond hardness and is the highest among other stones.

These qualities allowed the space stone to so quickly become the center of attention of the entire jewelry world. If you want to buy quality gold jewelry with moussanite, our online store is at your service.
